Signs You Need Light Installation

Lighting problems creep. Nobody books a sparkie the first time a downlight flickers, but there is a point where the fitting is telling you something.

Give us a ring if you recognise any of these.

  • A downlight has started flickering or dropping out, and tapping it brings it back for a week.
  • The dimmer buzzes, or the LEDs you just bought will not dim smoothly no matter which one you fit.
  • Fittings are warm to the touch, or there are brown halos on the ceiling around them.
  • You are still lighting a whole room from one dusty batten holder in the middle of the ceiling.
  • Halogens are eating power and heat, and the globes have become a quarterly chore.
  • The back yard is a black hole after dark, and the sensor light out there gave up years ago.

Inside a Typical Light Installation Job

Most of our lighting work is not exotic. It is getting the right fitting into the right spot with the wiring above it done properly, which is most of the job and all of the risk.

This is what sits under the service.

  • Downlights and layouts. Planning where they land so you get even light instead of a runway, then cutting, wiring and terminating each one.
  • Pendants and feature fittings. Fixings rated for the weight, not a plasterboard anchor and a prayer, plus the switching to suit.
  • Dimmers that actually dim. Matching the dimmer to the driver, which is why your last LED upgrade started buzzing.
  • Outdoor and garden lighting. Floodlights, sensors, path and garden runs, weatherproofed and buried properly.
  • Halogen to LED conversions. Old cans out, new fittings in, and the loft insulation clearance checked while we are up there.
  • Switching and controls. Two-way switches, extra points, and smart switches where you want them, using Clipsal gear that will still have parts in ten years.

What Your Light Installation Quote Depends On

There is no set price on lighting, because a job is really two jobs stacked: the fittings, and the ceiling they have to go into. Here is what we weigh up.

  • How many fittings, and where. Six downlights in a straight line is a different day to six scattered across a room with joists in the wrong places.
  • What is above the ceiling. A brick-veneer place from the eighties or nineties usually has a manhole and a roof space we can move through. Pre-1940 stock is often a 400mm crawl on your belly with a torch in your teeth.
  • Whether the wiring up there is fit to reuse. Old circuits sometimes need attention before new fittings hang off them, and that is a conversation before the job, not a surprise during it.
  • The fittings you choose. SAL and Beacon Lighting sit at different points, and we will talk you through budget to premium without pushing you up the list.
  • Outdoor runs. Distance, trenching and weatherproofing make a garden job its own thing.

Quotes are free, we don't charge by the hour, and you get a fixed written quote before anyone opens a ceiling.

What We See in Eastwood Homes

Eastwood was not built in one go, and you can read the decades off the ceiling.

The suburb's stock runs pre-1940, then a wave through the forties to the sixties, then more again from the eighties into the two-thousands. Three eras, three completely different jobs with the same fitting.

Balaclava Road carries the traffic. The streets behind it carry the gardens, sitting on the sort of deep, canopied blocks that swallow a floodlight whole.

That is why so much of our lighting work here happens outside: long runs down to a shed, sensors under a canopy that swallows what little light gets past it, and floodlights aimed away from the neighbours.

One homeowner, Richard, told us the spot was awkward to reach and we ended up cutting growth back ourselves before a cable could go anywhere near it.

What NSW Requires for Light Installation

Every fitting we wire goes in to the AS/NZS 3000 wiring rules, which cover how the circuit is protected, how the fitting is terminated, and what clearances it needs.

Clearance matters more than people expect. A downlight sitting under loose insulation is a fire waiting for a hot night, so fittings are chosen and installed for the ceiling they are actually going into.

Where the work is notifiable electrical work, you get a certificate of compliance for electrical work, lodged with NSW Fair Trading. It is the document that proves the job was done by someone licensed to do it.

And the part people wish was different: DIY electrical work is illegal in NSW, ceilings included.

Our Light Installation Process, Start to Finish

A room of downlights is usually a few hours. A whole-house LED conversion, or a garden run with trenching, typically fills a day, and we say which one you are before we start.

  1. We walk the rooms with you. What you want lit, what annoys you now, and where the switches should have been in the first place.
  2. You get the quote in writing. Fittings, labour, testing, GST, all of it on the page and explained on site.
  3. We install. Drop sheets down and the place left tidy, holes cut clean, fittings landed and the circuit made off properly.
  4. We test and hand over. Everything tested before we sign off, dimmers proven, certificate issued, and the offcuts leave with us.

Why This Is a Job for Our Team

Lighting is where cheap work hides best. The fitting looks the same on day one whether the terminations were done right or not.

We fit SAL and Beacon fittings, and we match each dimmer to its driver instead of guessing, because a buzzing dimmer is the single most common thing we get called back to somebody else's install to fix.

Our workmanship carries a lifetime workmanship guarantee. If a fitting we wired fails on our account, we come back and fix it at no cost.

Light Installation Across Eastwood and Surrounding Areas

Lighting jobs often land next to other work: a board upgrade when the circuits are full, or a full house look when the reno is on anyway.

Lighting takes us right across Eastwood and the neighbouring Ryde suburbs: Marsfield, Macquarie Park and Beecroft among them.

Common questions

Eastwood Light Installation FAQs

Everything homeowners ask us before the ladder comes off the van.

Is light installation something a handyman can legally do?

No. Swapping a plug-in lamp is yours to do, but anything wired to a circuit is licensed work, and a handyman fitting a downlight is quietly voiding your insurance while he does it.

What do you need from me on the day?

Clear access under the fittings and somewhere to park close enough to carry gear. If you have chosen your own pendants, have them out of the boxes so we can check the fixings before the ladder goes up.

Can light installation be done without turning off power all day?

Usually, yes. We isolate the lighting circuit rather than the whole house, so the fridge and the office keep running while we work overhead.

How is light installation covered if something fails later?

Two ways. Our labour carries a lifetime workmanship guarantee, and the fittings themselves get a 12-month product warranty from us on top of whatever the manufacturer offers.

Can you give me a ballpark on light installation?

Not honestly over the phone, because fitting count and ceiling access drive it more than anything. We quote free on site, in writing, and the price we quote is the price you pay.

Is any house too old for light installation?

Never met one. Older ceilings sometimes need the wiring above them looked at first, and a pre-1940 roof space is a tighter crawl, but the fittings still go in.
